Rukhmabai (1864–1955) became one of the first Indian women to challenge child marriage in court — at a time when obedience was expected and resistance was punished. Her legal battle sparked national debate and contributed to reform in marriage laws.

She was mocked.
She was shamed.
She was threatened.

But she did not bend.

Later, she became one of India’s first practicing women doctors — not because it was easy, but because she refused to let society decide the limits of her life.
